Former Soviet cosmonaut. Visited Hiroshima in 1965 and 1981. In 1963 became the first woman in space when she flew aboard Vostok 6. Her first words in space were, “This is Chaika” a reference to her radio call sign, which means seagull. On her first visit to Hiroshima she was accompanied by her husband, cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev. Her second visit in the capacity of head of a delegation of Soviet women included a meeting with students at Honkawa Elementary School.
