Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989)

Soviet physicist known as the “father of the hydrogen bomb.” After 1958 opposed nuclear testing. Later worked to promote cooperation between the East and West and to safeguard human rights. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975.
