Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama (1935- )

Born in Tibet. Recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of 5. Fled to India in 1959 following the invasion of Tibet by China. Since then has called for the autonomy and freedom of Tibet and worked to spread Tibetan Buddhism. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
