English film director covers Hiroshima aboard A-bombed streetcar 08/05/01

A film crew of four, including the British film director, Dusty Rhodef attended an event called "Telling the A-bomb Experience aboard an A-bombed Streetcar," held on August 4 in Hiroshima City. They are producing a documentary about female students who worked as streetcar drivers around the time of the bombing.

The crew, together with about 80 schoolchildren, boarded the streetcar for Hiroshima Station at the Chudenmae streetcar stop in Naka Ward.

On the streetcar, Ishida Akira (73), Chairman of the Hiroshima Prefecture Hibakusha Teachers' Association, told the children of the scenes at the time of the bombing. "There was a loud noise and I passed out. When I came to, I was buried under dead bodies," Ishida said. Rhodef filmed Ishida and the children, who listened intently to Ishida's stories.

Rhodef, who was visiting Hiroshima for the first time, said, "After listening to the A-bomb survivor's stories and actually seeing the A-bomb Dome. I strongly felt that we must keep a record for posterity."
