Hibakusha and foreign students, 2nd team of 5 visits China, Korea, departs on 19t -- Jun 6,2004

The second team of the Hiroshima World Peace Mission (sponsored by the Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation) was decided on the 5th. For three weeks they will visit China and South Korea, where even the younger generations are harshly critical regarding Japan's responsibility for the war. They will discuss historical perspectives and look for ways to link the past to the future. From Hiroshima, four citizens, including a foreign student from China, will depart on the 19th for Beijing and arrive in Seoul on July 1. There, they will be joined by the former president of the Korean A-bomb Survivors Association.

The four members include Kazuo Fukushima (72) living in Saeki-ku Hiroshima City, who was exposed to the A-bomb when he was a second-year student in junior high school and lost six members of his family; Haruko Inoshita (72) living in Minami-ku Hiroshima City, who graduated from the Korean language course at Yonsei University in Seoul and supports hibakusha in South Korea; Xunfei Yue (32) from Nei, the Mongol Autonomous Territory of China living in Higashi-Hiroshima City and studying Oriental History at the Graduate School of Letters, Hiroshima University. He came to Japan 13 years ago; Shota Moriue (20) from Hatsukaichi City, a junior at Tokyo University studying International relations.

The first member from overseas is Kifun Kwaku (79), who filed a lawsuit about a year ago that paved the way for A-bomb victims living in overseas to receive a healthcare allowance.

The visit to China will be accomplished through the cooperation of the relevant agencies of the Chinese government and the party. They will provide a forum in which to tell local residents about the atomic bombing. The Mission will also visit places that tell about the invasion by the Japanese military and will learn together about the terrible consequences of war. Across the generations, they will talk about how to create a "future orientation" in South Korea. Inoshita expressed her desire to "talk from the heart.". Yue showed his enthusiasm to "share in a spirit of brotherhood what I have learned in Hiroshima." Second team selected from 72 applicants, accompanied by Chugoku Shimbun reporter and cameraman.
