外国でも平和を話し合うために

「原爆慰霊碑の印象を教えてください」。前回のＢＯＮＵＳ問題には、廿日市市のＫＥＮさんや広島県府中町のＳＯＳ男さんなど多くの皆さんが答を寄せてくださいました。悲劇が二度と起きないよう核兵器廃絶を願わずにいられない、という内容が多かったです。

ところで、原爆慰霊碑に刻まれた英文には「秘話」があるのを知ってますか。

広島市の浜井信三市長は当時、碑文の古典研究で有名な広島大の雑賀忠義教授に日本語の碑文を依頼しました。英文への翻訳は、米国・イリノイ州立大の学生だった雑賀教授の長男に手伝ってもらったものです。

しかし、英文にある「私たち」の意味が議論を呼びました。インドのパール博士（極東国際軍事裁判判事）が１９５２年１１月、「私たち」は日本人を指しているとし、日本人は原爆投下を責められるべきではない、と指摘。論争が巻き起こりました。雑賀教授は「私たち」は世界人類を指す、と主張。浜井市長も主語は全人類で、平和への願い、戦争を繰り返さない誓いの意味であると説明し、パール博士も納得しました。

The official name of this monument is the "Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace." It was unveiled on August 6, 1952. The monument is inscribed with the English words: "Let All the Souls Here Rest in Peace; For We Shall Not Repeat the Evil." The stone chest in the center holds a registry of the names of the victims. Along with Japanese names, it includes the names of some foreign nationals, such as Koreans and American prisoners of war. Each year, just before the Peace Memorial Ceremony of August 6, new names are added.

この碑の正式名称は「広島平和都市祈念碑」です。１９５２年８月６日に除幕されました。碑には英語で「安らかに眠って下さい　過ちは繰り返しませぬから」と書いてあります。中央の石室には原爆死没者名簿が入っています。日本人の名前とともに、韓国人や米国人捕虜など外国人の名前も含まれています。毎年、８月６日の平和記念式典の前に、新たな名前が加えられます。

The Children's Peace Monument was unveiled on May 5 1958. The movement to raise the monument was inspired by the death of Sadako Sasaki. It is dedicated to all the children who died as a result of the atomic bombing. On top of the monument is a statue of a girl holding a paper crane. Today, paper cranes are sent to Hiroshima from all over the world. The paper crane has become a symbol of peace.
