外国でも平和を話し合うために

皆さん、よい新年を迎えられましたでしょうか。昨年末のこのコーナーで「２０１０年に少しでも世界を平和にするために、あなたができることは何ですか？」と出題しました。これは難問です。個人ができることは小さく、平和問題は巨大ですから。

しかし、１人が踏み出す一歩は、例え小さくても、まぎれもない一歩であることは間違いありません。廿日市市のＫＥＮさん（62）のように、戦争の悲劇を若い世代に伝える努力をしたい、と答えた人が何人かいました。核兵器廃絶に向けて弾みをつける大切な年にするには、このような行動は特に大切になります。（わたし自身の答えは、解答欄にあります）

The Chinese Parasol Tree, standing next to Peace Memorial Museum, is a survivor of the atomic bombing. It was originally located about 1.3 kilometers from the hypocenter. The tree was badly damaged in the bombing and everyone thought it was dead. But in the spring of 1946, new shoots appeared. This new growth gave encouragement to the A-bomb survivors. The tree was moved to Peace Memorial Park in 1973. Seeds from this tree have been planted in places around the world.

原爆資料館の隣りに立っているアオギリは原爆に耐えて生き延びてきました。元々は、爆心地から約1.3キロ離れた所にありました。木は大きな被害を受けたため、だれもが枯れたと思いました。しかし１９４６年春、新しい枝が出てきました。この生長は被爆者を元気づけました。木は１９７３年に平和公園に移されました。この木の種は世界中に植えられています。

The Fountain of Prayer is the large fountain located near Peace Memorial Museum. The fountain was constructed by Hiroshima Bank in 1964 and donated to the city. It is dedicated to the victims of the atomic bombing who died crying out for water. The fountain shoots water to a height of 10 meters and is illuminated at night by 153 underwater lamps. It is considered one of the most beautiful fountains in western Japan.
