外国でも平和を話し合うために

米国イリノイ州出身。ニューヨークの大学と、サンフランシスコの大学院で演劇を勉強。大学院生のときに「ピースコール」というボランティアとして、ヨーロッパのチェコで英語の先生をした。広島市安佐北区在住。

前回のコラムで平和の泉を紹介しました。その時、国内外の美しい泉、噴水について質問しました。平和大通りにある２つの平和大橋をデザインした日系米国人の有名な彫刻家、故イサム・ノグチ氏は、１９７０年に開かれた大阪万博でとても美しい「９つの浮かぶ噴水」を制作しました。写真はインターネットで見られます。

欧州やロシアは、古くて美しい泉や噴水で知られています。米国で最も素晴らしいのは、ラスベガスのベラージオホテルの前にあるベラージオの噴水でしょう。光と音楽で大がかりに演出された水のパフォーマンスが見られます。

The Fountain of Prayer is the large fountain located near Peace Memorial Museum. The fountain was constructed by Hiroshima Bank in 1964 and donated to the city. It is dedicated to the victims of the atomic bombing who died crying out for water. The fountain shoots water to a height of 10 meters and is illuminated at night by 153 underwater lamps. It is considered one of the most beautiful fountains in western Japan.

祈りの泉は、原爆資料館の近くにある大きな噴水です。１９６４年に広島銀行に建設され、広島市に寄贈されました。水を求めながら亡くなった被爆者たちに捧げられています。噴水は１０メートルの高さに上がり、夜には水面下にある１５３の明かりで彩られます。西日本で最も美しい噴水の１つに考えられています。

The target for the atomic bomb was actually the Aioi Bridge. However, the bomb exploded in the air above Shima Hospital. Shima Hospitl is located about 300 meters from Aioi Bridge. The temperature in this area became incredibly hot. In fact, it was more than twice as hot as the temperature that can melt steel. The derector of Shima Hospital was away that day and survived. Everyone in the building, though, was killed.
