English Challenge

前回の課題には、あまり多くの応募がありませんでした。もしかしたら座って英語のエッセーを書くより、春の行楽を楽しむ人が多かったのかもしれません、次は、寂しん坊の私のために、天気の良い日に外を散歩しながらエッセーを考えてみてください！

前回の課題は海外ボランティアについてでした。若い人からの応募がいくつかありました。広島市西区の高校１年柚（ゆず）さんは「I want to go to a country which has many orphans」（孤児がたくさんいる国に行きたい）と書いていました。特に、多くの孤児院についての記事を読んだカンボジアに興味があるそうです。柚さんは今、中古の靴をアフリカの子どもたちに送るプロジェクトに参加している、とのこと。私が１５歳だったころ、孤児を助けるなんて考えもしていなかったので、感心しました。

同区の大学生Murataさんは渡航経験はないものの、ドイツに行ってみたいそうです。「I want to be involved in preserving historical structures for the future」（歴史的な建造物の保存活動をしたい）とのことです。これも大切ですよね。広島でも原爆ドームのように歴史的な建造物があります。

If you could have a volunteer experience overseas, where would you like to go? What would you like to do? Why? (If you've already had a volunteer experience overseas, feel free to write about that.)

もし海外ボランティアをする機会があればどこへ行きたいですか？何をしたいですか？なぜ？（既に経験がある人は経験談を書いてください）

From 1992 to 1994, I was a volunteer in the Czech Republic. Actually, at the time I went there the country was still Czechoslovakia. However, while I was there, it split peacefully into the two nations of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. I was a member of a U.S. government program called the Peace Corps--it's similar to JICA. In 1989, Czechoslovakia experienced a revolution and broke free of the former Soviet Union's influence. Before that time, the people were forced to study Russian. However, after the revolution they became eager to learn English. So I was sent there to teach English at a university in the city of Plzen and help train new English teachers. The Czech Republic is a beautiful country and the people are very friendly and lively. I had an exciting experience as a volunteer there and I hope someday I'll have the chance to return for a visit and see old friends again.

１９９２年から９４年まで、私はボランティアとしてチェコ共和国に行きました。当時はまだチェコスロバキアでした。滞在中にチェコ共和国とスロバキアに分かれたのです。私は米国平和部隊という、国際協力機構（ＪＩＣＡ）のような米国政府のプログラムの一員だったのです。１９８９年、チェコスロバキアでは革命が起き、旧ソビエト連邦の影響下から自由になっていました。以前はロシア語を学ぶよう義務付けられていましたが、革命後、英語の学習希望者が増えていました。そこで私はプルゼニ市の大学で英語を教えたり、英語教師を指導したりしました。チェコ共和国は美しい国で、人々は優しく朗らかです。私はボランティアとしていい経験をしました。いつか機会があれば再び訪れて古い友人に会いたいです。

Ms.Murata:	Thank you for your essay. I hope you'll have the chance to visit Germany one day. And while you're there, please go to the Czech Republic, too. It's a beautiful country. What experiences have you had in connection with the story of Sadako Sasaki?

Almost ten years ago I started a small program of English classes and called it "Sadako's School". I taught the classes as a volunteer and the students' fees became donations for children in need. Half of the money went to support children in Hiroshima and the other half went to children overseas. In Hiroshima, for example, the donations were given to a children's shelter and a program for children who are hospitalized. The donations for children overseas were sent to children's orphanages in countries like the Philippines and Kenya. In these classes, the students and I talked about the problems of children in Japan and in the world. We also exchanged letters, in English, with the children in the orphanages abroad. It was a good experience for everyone and I hope I'll have the chance to do it again one day. The inspiration for "Sadako's School," of course, was the story of Sadako Sasaki.
