外国でも平和を話し合うために

English Challenge

新年のスタートはうまく切れましたか。年賀状を下さった皆さん、ありがとうございました。

さて前回の課題は「平和に関する２０１１年のあなたの目標を教えてください。１文で表現し、理由や考えを書いてください」でした。届いたエッセーにはいろんな願いや目標がつづられていました。その中で、驚くことに、ほとんど人たちが「相手の立場に立つ」ということを挙げていました。

個人レベルでは、エゴを捨て、他人の立場や感情を理解しようとすれば、良好で平和的な関係が築けるでしょう。グループや国家間でも同じことが言えるはずです。もちろん、さまざまな紛争紛争がある中、相互理解が「魔法の棒」にはならないでしょうが、真剣に努力すれば実を結ぶと思います。

応募者のエッセーの一例を挙げると、広島県府中町のＳＯＳ男さんは「Consideration for others and their feelings is the fundamental principle leading to all peace（他人や他人の感情を考えることがみんなが平和になるための基本です）」と記していました。皆さんも、ことしは、相手の立場に立って考えることを考えながら暮らしていきませんか。

Thinking about peace, what is your biggest hope or wish for 2011? Write that hope or wish in one sentence, and then explain your thoughts and feelings behind it.

平和に関する２０１１年のあなたの抱負は何ですか

When I think about peace, I believe we have to start with ourselves. If we don't feel at peace in our own lives, it's hard to help nurture peace out in the world. In this regard, I often think about something my grandfather said. I didn't know him very well when he was alive-my grandparents lived far away from us-but after he died, I discovered a box of poetry that he had written when he was older. In one poem, he was wondering to himself: What was I really looking for during my lifetime? His answer: peace of mind. And I think peace of mind is my main aim, too. So my biggest hope or wish for 2011 is: I would like to maintain peace of mind in my own life. And the more I can do this-feeling at peace in my own life-the more I can help nurture peace in the world around me.

平和について考えるとき、まずは自分たち自身について考えることから始めなければいけないと思っています。もし私たちが自身の生活を平和だと感じていないのならば、世界で平和を育むのは難しいのです。これについて、私はしばしば祖父が言っていた事を思い出します。祖父は私たちから遠く離れて暮らしていたので、私は生前の祖父をよく知りませんでした。しかし祖父が亡くなった後、祖父が往年つづった詩が入った箱を見つけました。その中の一つに、祖父が自分自身のことを考えて書いた詩がありました。「自分の人生で本当に求めていたものは何だったのか」。祖父の答えは「心の平和」でした。私も「心の平和」が自分の大きな目標だと思います。ですから私の２０１１年の抱負は「心の平和を保つこと」です。自分の心がもっと安らげば、自分の周りの世界をさらに平和にすることができます。

Ms. MURATA :	Good luck with your English this year! Just remember that learning a language is like running a marathon. It takes a long time to reach your goal, but step by step by step, you can do it. If you study every day for 30 minutes--reading, vocabulary, grammar, speaking, writing, etc.--in one year you can make a lot of progress. Step by step by step, day by day by day...

Ms. vine eggs :	Thank you for the lovely card! I think it's great that you're expressing yourself more in English now. I'm happy that I could help inspire that step. Please continue trying hard in 2011. You're clearly making progress in your English skill and I always enjoy reading what you have to say.
Ms. Mackey :	First of all, I send my warm wishes to you for the birth of your new baby! I look forward to hearing the good news after the baby arrives! As for your essay, I completely understand. In fact, one of the positive things for me about living in a foreign country is that I can't comprehend everything that's going on around me! That helps keep my mind uncluttered and at peace, I think!

さて、今回の課題です。同じページにある「地球人として生きる（上）」に、渡部朋子さんがさまざまな活動の基本として「信頼」の大切さを書いているのにちなんで「信頼を寄せる人はいますか。その人について教えてください」とします。その人の紹介、その人との体験などどんなことでも構いません。ことし最初のエッセーを読むのを楽しみにしています！

Who is someone you trust? Tell me something about that person.

It’s funny, because the article above is about Tomoko Watanabe, but I think she’s the person I will choose for my essay. I met Tomoko almost ten years ago. I went to her office to tell her about an idea I had for a special art exhibition. I heard that Tomoko is a very helpful person and I was hoping she might help me. Our meeting that day resulted in the start of Art Party. Art Party is a charity event where pictures made by children in need, from a variety of countries, are displayed and sold at the art gallery in Aster Plaza. The money raised is then sent back to the children as a donation. Since December 2003, when the first Art Party exhibition was held, there has been an exhibition every year. And it’s because of Tomoko’s kind, smiling help and strong, positive spirit that the idea of Art Party was realized and has continued to this day.
