Foreign Minister from Paraguay visits Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

by Toshiko Bajo, Staff Writer

Hector Ricardo Lacognata Zaragoza, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Paraguay, visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on January 20. Seeing the damage wrought by the atomic bombing, he commented, "Eliminating war worldwide is my mission as a politician."

During a roughly one-hour tour of the museum, guided by museum director Koichiro Maeda, Dr. Lacognata looked closely at a panoramic model and photo panels depicting the devastation. He also asked questions about the population of Hiroshima at the time of the bombing and whether there was any warning before the blast.

Later, after reading the panels about Mayors for Peace activities, Dr. Lacognata said, "I would like to encourage the mayors of Paraguay to join the Mayors for Peace network." Currently, only one city in Paraguay, San Lorenzo, is a member of Mayors for Peace.

This was Dr. Lacognata's first visit to Hiroshima. The minister offered flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims and also visited the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims.
