by Uzaemonnaotsuka Tokai, Staff Writer

The Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-bomb Sufferers Organizations held a meeting of regional representatives at Mielparque-Hiroshima, a downtown hotel, on January 21. Recognizing that this year is "an important year for the abolition of nuclear weapons" mainly because the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference will be held this May in the United States, the participants confirmed their intention to expand their appeal for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Roughly 80 people, including the representatives of 52 regional groups, attended the meeting. Chairman Sunao Tsuboi shared the group's plan to dispatch 56 members of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations to the NPT Review Conference as well as the current status of nuclear weapons both in Japan and the world. "Let's continue to raise our voices to send the message that nuclear weapons have to be abolished," he said to the participants.

At the meeting, Hiromi Hasai, a professor emeritus at Hiroshima University and an A-bomb survivor, delivered a speech. Dr. Hasai emphasized the importance of handing down A-bomb experiences to the younger generation in their own words.
