by Junji Akechi, Staff Writer

The outline of the 2010 APEC Junior Conference in Hiroshima to be held in February in conjunction with the APEC senior officials' meeting was released on January 25. Taking part in the conference will be 37 young people from 19 countries and regions including Japan, among the 21 APEC member countries and regions. The participants will exchange ideas and opinions under the main theme of "Our Future, the Earth's Future: Creating a Peaceful, Prosperous Society." Local high school students will support the conference as volunteers.

The conference will be hosted by the executive committee consisting of the City of Hiroshima, the Chugoku Shimbun and other entities for four days from February 20 through February 23 at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Arthur Binard, a Tokyo-based American poet, will deliver the keynote speech entitled "You Are What You Speak?—Language, Food, and Survival."

Based on the keynote speech, the participants will engage in discussion in English in four different workshops with the themes of education, cross-cultural understanding, food and poverty, and the environment. They will wrap up the conference by drafting a declaration and deliver it to participants of the senior officials' meeting.

The Junior Conference participants will also learn about the damage wrought by the atomic bombing. In addition to visiting Peace Memorial Museum and touring Peace Memorial Park, they will listen to the testimony of A-bomb survivor Keijiro Matsushima. The keynote speech as well as discussions will be open to the public. Simultaneous interpreting will be available for some portions.

Local high school students will be extensively involved in lending support for the conference. They will offer a peace study session, provide a guide service on the Miyajima sightseeing tour, make commemorative gifts for the participants, compile reference materials about participating countries and regions, and more. These students have been working with the executive committee in making preparations for the conference.
