Panels describing achievements of Dr. Marcel Junod on display in four venues in Hiroshima

by Daisuke Suzuki, Staff Writer

Four banks located in Higashi Ward, Hiroshima are simultaneously holding panel exhibitions featuring Marcel Junod (1904-61), a Swiss doctor, in their lobbies. The exhibitions honor his achievements of bringing medical supplies to Hiroshima in the aftermath of the atomic bombing. The exhibitions, free of charge, will run through February 20.

The exhibitions are being held at the Ushita branches of Hiroshima Bank, Momiji Bank, Hiroshima Shinkin Bank, and JA-Hiroshima. The Ushita branch of Hiroshima Shinkin Bank is displaying two panels of 0.9 meters in length and 1.8 meters in width.

One of the panels describes how Dr. Junod persuaded the General Headquarters of the Allied Forces (GHQ) to allow him to deliver 15 tons of medical supplies to Hiroshima. The other panel introduces an animated film depicting Dr. Junod's life of human service, which the "Dr. Junod Animation Film Production Committee," comprised of a nonprofit organization and others in Higashi Ward, intends to complete this spring.

Shizuko Tsuya, 54, representative of the production committee, called for the exhibitions to be held at the same time. Ken Kumada, 34, a company employee and Higashi Ward resident who visited Hiroshima Shinkin Bank, said, "Hiroshima citizens should learn more about those who helped the A-bomb survivors."
