Discussion begins in committee on nuclear disarmament

by Yumi Kanazaki, Staff Writer, dispatched from New York

On May 7, the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference began discussion in Main Committee 1, which deals with nuclear disarmament issues, at U.N. Headquarters in New York. Ambassador Akio Suda, head of the Delegation of Japan to the Conference on Disarmament, reaffirmed the "unequivocal undertaking" toward nuclear abolition, which was contained in the final document of the 2000 NPT Review Conference, and called on the nuclear weapon states to reduce both strategic and non-strategic nuclear weapons.

Remarks were also made by the United States and Iran. Iran criticized anew the United States and European nations, saying that the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) had adopted the repugnant doctrine of openly threatening to use or using nuclear weapons against non-nuclear weapon states.

Of the three main committees at the NPT Review Conference, the remaining two committees on the themes of nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy will begin discussion on May 10.
