A-bomb exhibition planned for August in Daegu, South Korea

by Junji Hayashi, Staff Writer

Daegu Korean Youth Corps (KYC), a citizens' group in the city of Daegu, South Korea, is planning to hold an A-bomb exhibition from August 6-14 in Daegu. The decision to hold the exhibition was made as an effort to ponder peace in Asia this year, which marks the 100th year of Japan's annexation of the Korean Peninsula.

On June 16, Kim Dong Ryeol, 42, a Daigu KYC representative, visited the Monument in Memory of the Korean Victims of the A-bomb and reaffirmed his commitment to the success of the exhibition. Mr. Kim arrived in Japan on June 14 and visited three places, including Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. At the museum he was guided by Keisaburo Toyonaga, 74, director of the Hiroshima branch of the Association of Citizens for the Support of South Korean Atomic Bomb Victims, and Mr. Kim requested loans of such materials as photo panels of people exposed to the bombing and videos in which A-bomb survivors residing in Korea share their A-bomb accounts.

Daegu (officially, Daegu Metropolitan City) has a sister city relationship with the city of Hiroshima, and is known to have a number of A-bomb survivors among its residents. A-bomb exhibitions were held in Daegu in 2005 and 2006, but this is the first time that a full-scale indoor exhibition will be held. To enhance the exhibition, Daigu KYC is thinking about translating a picture book entitled "My Hiroshima" into Korean and displaying it at the exhibition. The book was written by Junko Morimoto, an A-bomb survivor and a resident of Australia.

With the A-bomb survivors in Korea growing older, Mr. Kim expressed eagerness to nurture a spirit of peace building among the younger generation.
