by Sakiko Masuda, Staff Writer

On August 2, 2010, the City of Hiroshima announced a list of nine foreign ambassadors to Japan who will offer flowers to the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims at the Peace Memorial Ceremony to be held on August 6. John Roos, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, who will attend the ceremony as the first U.S. government representative, was not included on the list. According to the city, the ambassadors who will offer flowers at the ceremony were selected in the order in which their credentials were formally submitted to the Emperor of Japan.

Ambassadors to offer flowers are from nine nations, including Mexico, Australia, and the Vatican. The nine ambassadors will be divided into groups of three, with each group presenting flowers at the Cenotaph.

The attendance by Ambassador Roos at the Peace Memorial Ceremony was officially announced by the U.S. government on July 28. An offering of flowers had reportedly been considered as well. Ambassador Roos offered flowers at the Cenotaph last October when he visited Hiroshima after assuming his post.
