IAEA chief attends Peace Memorial Ceremony

by Kei Kinugawa, Staff Writer

On August 6, Yukiya Amano attended the Peace Memorial Ceremony in Hiroshima, the first director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to be present at the event, and shared his observation that the world has taken another important step toward the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Mr. Amano praised the attendance of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and representatives of the nuclear weapon states, including U.S. Ambassador John Roos. He said that references to nuclear abolition met strong opposition from many nations in the past, but today, the idea of "a world without nuclear weapons" is accepted, without pause, by those in attendance.

Mr. Amano went on to say that the IAEA will make efforts to further strengthen measures for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as measures to combat nuclear terrorism.
