U.N. Secretary-General asks Clinton to visit Hiroshima

by Kiyoko Takahashi, Staff Writer

At a press conference held on August 18, Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki revealed that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who attended the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony held on August 6, called U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to request that she visit Hiroshima.

The secretary-general shared this information with Governor Yuzaki at a luncheon meeting on August 6. The governor noted that Mr. Ban did not mention Ms. Clinton's response. "The international trend with regard to nuclear abolition is changing," said Mr. Yuzaki. "We must consider what should be done to advance nuclear abolition under such circumstances."

The governor also touched on the remark made by Prime Minister Naoto Kan after the Peace Memorial Ceremony, in which Mr. Kan stated that nuclear deterrence is still necessary. "That remark was not appropriate," Mr. Yuzaki said. "Hiroshima's goal is to change the nation's security policy so it will no longer depend on nuclear deterrence."
