On November 14, the final day of the 2010 World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates held in the A-bombed city of Hiroshima, the “Peace Summit Award 2010” was presented to former Italian soccer star Roberto Baggio, 43, and a special award for the Hiroshima summit was given to the Japan Confederation of A-and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations at Peace Memorial Park. Mr. Baggio, and Sunao Tsuboi, 85, representing the Confederation, shook hands, and pledged to continue their efforts to help realize a peaceful world.

At the awards ceremony, Mr. Baggio spoke to the public, saying “Every person in the world can be an ambassador of peace.” He made a point of emphasizing the importance of younger generations engaging in peace activities, remarking, “I want them to remember the cruelty and tragedy brought about by conflict.”

During his career as an athlete, Mr. Baggio captivated the world’s soccer fans with his splendid play. Since his retirement, he has been active in humanitarian efforts, such as the eradication of poverty and hunger. Mr. Baggio was also recognized for his work in seeking the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who had been under house arrest in Myanmar.

The Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Survivors organizations was honored for its long-time efforts on behalf of nuclear abolition. Mr. Tsuboi, co-chair of the Confederation, and Sumiteru Taniguchi, 81, a Nagasaki A-bomb survivor and the other co-chair, attended the awards ceremony. Mr. Tsuboi voiced the vow that “We will strive, for as long as we live, to abolish nuclear weapons and achieve lasting peace in the world. With our strong belief that abolition will be realized, we will never give up this cause.”
