Lawmakers from Indonesia visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

by Keiichi Nagayama, Staff Writer

On November 20, three Indonesian lawmakers who have been visiting Japan at the invitation of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs toured Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Guided by Nobuto Sugiura, deputy director of the museum, the three lawmakers toured the museum and studied the exhibits. In front of a model depicting the devastation of the city of Hiroshima, they listened intently, with somber faces, to the explanation that wooden buildings within two kilometers of the hypocenter were completely destroyed in the blast.

Muhammad Azhari, 46, one of the lawmakers, said that he was shocked by the exhibits conveying the tragic damage, and that the experience strengthened his belief that nuclear weapons must never again cause such destruction.

The three legislators came to Japan on November 19. They will visit Kyoto and Tokyo, among other places, and return to Indonesia on November 26.
