IPPNW World Congress opens today in Hiroshima

by Kentaro Yamamoto, Staff Writer

Physicians from overseas arrived in Hiroshima one after another on August 23 to attend the 20th World Congress of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), which opens in the city on August 24. Some visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Memorial Park to learn about the devastating consequences of the atomic bombing.

Eight doctors from India, Nepal, and Canada took part in the museum tour organized by the Japan branch of IPPNW. They looked carefully at a charred tricycle and panels explaining the effects of radiation, among other exhibits.

Satyajit Singh, 62, a surgeon from India, said that the harrowing exhibits had made him recognize anew the importance of peace. He plans to share what he learned with the younger generations of India. Some doctors also paid a visit to the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Minami Ward, Hiroshima.

Before the opening of the congress, the international board meeting of IPPNW was held on August 23 at the International Conference Center Hiroshima. About 50 members of the board from various nations reported on progress in nuclear disarmament and mine-eliminating projects, among other activities.

The IPPNW World Congress, to be held in Hiroshima for the first time in 23 years, will take place at the International Conference Center Hiroshima from August 24 to 26. About 470 medical doctors and researchers from 41 countries will exchange a range of views as they seek to advance the elimination of nuclear arms.
