English book on medical care after nuclear accident published by Hiroshima professor

by Yota Baba, Staff Writer

Radiation Disaster Medicine, an English-language book on the emergency medical care provided in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and the lessons learned in addressing this crisis, has been published by Koichi Tanigawa, director of the Advanced Emergency and Critical Care Center at Hiroshima University Hospital, and others.

The 126-page book describes the emergency medical care Dr. Tanigawa and other specialists provided in the disaster area and how they made decisions despite lacking sufficient information. Learning from cases in which inpatients died during evacuations, the book stresses the importance of emergency planning. The book also includes photos of decontamination measures carried out on patients who were exposed to radiation.

Regarding the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear power plant, experts at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other institutions have pointed out that they could not grasp the entire picture of the disaster. This book was written in response to these voices and is sold to overseas experts through a German publisher.

Dr. Tanigawa said, “What we have experienced in Fukushima has drawn the world’s attention. I thought we could share the lessons we learned through a book written in English.”
