This video was originally shot on March 20, 2000, when Ms. Matsubara related her experience of the atomic bombing to children in the United States. The sound quality reflects the technology of that time.
Miyoko Matsubara
Ms. Matsubara was born in 1932. She was exposed to the atomic bombing in the Hiratsuka area, 1.5 kilometers from the hypocenter, while mobilized to help dismantle houses to create a fire lane. She was 12 at the time, a first-year student at Hiroshima Girls' Commercial School. She suffered severe burns all over her body. In 1962, she traveled around the world as a member of the World Peace Pilgrimage, calling for nuclear abolition alongside Barbara Reynolds, an American peace activist. In 1964, she traveled to seven western nations as a member of the Hiroshima & Nagasaki World Peace Study Mission. She has been sharing her experience of the bombing widely ever since.
