Hiroshima Prefecture to hold symposium in New York to coincide with NPT session

On April 7, Hiroshima Prefecture announced the outline of a symposium that it will hold on April 30 at United Nations Headquarters in New York to coincide with the third session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Hidehiko Yuzaki, governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, and Kazumi Matsui, mayor of the City of Hiroshima, will give presentations on the activities pursued by Hiroshima, which experienced the atomic bombing. A panel discussion will follow, with participants from various NGOs.
At the symposium, titled “Putting Hiroshima’s Experience into Action for the Future,” Mr. Yuzaki will present the “Hiroshima Report,” which evaluates the disarmament efforts of individual nations. Mr. Matsui will describe the activities of Mayors for Peace, for which he serves as president. The panel discussion will include five other speakers, representing the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and other organizations.
Mr. Yuzaki will observe the NPT PrepCom session from April 28 to 30. He will be the first governor of Hiroshima to observe a PrepCom session. Before attending the session, he will also meet with members of the United States National Security Council (NSC), one of the highest government forums for determining diplomatic and military policies involving national security, and members of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a U.S.-based think tank. He also plans to give lectures at Georgetown University and Columbia University.
