Students of Hiroshima and Oman take part in panel discussion, explore path toward peace

On April 12, college students from Hiroshima and Oman, a nation in the Middle East, took part in a panel discussion on peace in Yasuhigashi Community Hall in Asaminami Ward, Hiroshima. The event was organized by a group of residents that has maintained ties with Oman after a connection was made at the time of the Asian Games in Hiroshima in 1994, when community centers in the city lent support to athletes from the participating countries.
The panel discussion was held in English. Four college students from Oman and Hiroshima, respectively, as well as a former Japanese ambassador to Oman and the current Omani ambassador to Japan, addressed the audience of about 50 people. Midori Sakoda, 19, a sophomore at the Faculty of Education of Hiroshima University, stressed that mutual understanding among young people was needed to create the future, even when they lived in different countries and had different cultures. Hisham Al-Hadhrami, 21, a senior at Sultan Qaboos University, said, in response, that it was important to find commonalities and reach out to one another.
On April 13, from noon to 3:30 p.m., the “Oman Fair” will be held at the same community hall. Visitors can listen to Omani music, played on musical instruments, and learn Arabic characters.
