by Kana Kobayashi, Staff Writer

Two high school students reported on their activities in connection with the third session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. Mami Hakoda and Chihiro Ogawa, both 17, were dispatched to the United States in the spring while the PrepCom was taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The students at Eishin Gakuen, which is located in the city of Fukuyama, shared their activities in New York with some 1,200 junior and senior high school students of the school.

The two students re-enacted the presentation they gave to administrative officials from around the world. In this presentation, they spoke in English on such themes as the wishes of A-bomb survivors. They said they became convinced that nuclear weapons can be eliminated. After listening to their presentation, Megumi Nagahisa, 15, a third-year junior high school student, said, “I must not forget about the A-bomb survivors and their experiences.”

The students were dispatched to the United States by the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation. A total of six high school students from Hiroshima Prefecture were there between April 27 and May 5.
