Messages from members of Mayors for Peace to be shared in newspaper, on website

Promoting momentum for nuclear abolition in 70th year since A-bombing

The Chugoku Shimbun, with support from Mayors for Peace, has called on the members of the group to offer messages which convey their connections to Hiroshima and their wishes for the abolition of nuclear weapons and peace in the world. With next year marking the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings, this effort seeks to advance the realization of a world without nuclear arms. Mayors for Peace, for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president, currently has 6,435 member cities in 160 countries and regions.

Members of the group who took part in a November meeting for Japanese member cities in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, were asked to provide a message. The messages from these 33 members are the first to appear in the Chugoku Shimbun. They will also be posted on the website of the Hiroshima Peace Media Center, which presents content in multiple languages with the aim of reaching a worldwide audience.

Masayoshi Komizo, the secretary general of Mayors for Peace, said, “We have been working to convey the wishes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki out of a sense of responsibility to protect our citizens and the citizens of the world. We will work in cooperation with our members to advance the global momentum for abolishing nuclear weapons from the earth.”
