Myanmar students visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, learn about atomic bombing

by Mio Hara, Staff Writer

Female high school students from Myanmar toured Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on February 11. The 10 students were guided by 14 students from Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior & Senior High School. The Japanese students provided explanation in English, helping the visitors learn about the reality of the damage wrought by the bombing.

The students from Myanmar are between 15 and 18. They looked pensively at a charred tricycle and photos of people who suffered burns all over their bodies. They also visited monuments in and around Peace Memorial Park.

Myat Phone Sint, 15, a first-year high school student, said, “The mannequins which show what the survivors looked like after the bombing made the biggest impression on me. This tragic event should never happen again.”

The group from Myanmar came to Hiroshima on February 10, as part of an exchange program sponsored by Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior & Senior High School. They will stay with Japanese students and attend classes with them until February 15.
