On July 30, Jimmy Page, 71, a guitarist from the famous UK rock band Led Zeppelin, visited the Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward, Hiroshima. It has been 44 years since he last came to Japan in 1971. His visit was motivated by his strong desire for peace in this 70th year since the atomic bombing.

Dressed in a dark suit and sunglasses, Mr. Page laid flowers at the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims and said that Hiroshima is now on the minds of people around the world and that we must persistently pray for peace.

The last time Mr. Page visited Hiroshima, he held a “Love and Peace” charity concert in the former Hiroshima Prefectural gymnasium in Naka Ward for about 5,000 excited fans. He donated the proceeds from that concert, amounting to some seven million yen, to the City of Hiroshima to aid atomic bomb survivors.

On this occasion, Mr. Page came to Hiroshima amid his promotional activities for a remastered album which includes some of his unreleased music. He met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at City Hall. Mr. Matsui expressed appreciation for his past donation and asked that he convey the message inscribed on the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims to the world. Mr. Page responded to the mayor’s request by saying that it is important for everyone to reflect on the victims while making the pledge, “Rest in peace, for we shall maintain peace in the world.”
