Promoting the cause of creating a world without nuclear weapons, atomic bomb survivors and members of civic groups took part in events in Tokyo on September 26, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, as designated by the United Nations.

The Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition held a lecture meeting and a panel discussion at the United Nations University in Shibuya Ward. Writer Genichiro Takahashi, 64, delivered a lecture on the antinuclear movement at this event attended by 113 people. Mr. Takahashi, who is originally from Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, said, “Instead of focusing only on how bad atomic bombs are, it is important to make many people realize that a world with nuclear weapons is a distorted world.”

High school students, foreign ministry officials, and A-bomb survivors participated in a panel discussion on the theme of what actions can now be taken to advance the abolition of nuclear arms. Chiho Kozakura, 17, a third-year student at the high school attached to Hiroshima University, said, “I hope to create a network of young people around the world and encircle the governments of the countries that cling to nuclear weapons.”

In front of JR Yurakucho Station, a signature drive was carried out by the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs and Toyukai, a Tokyo group of A-bomb sufferers. The participants of this campaign collected people’s signatures in support of realizing a nuclear weapons convention and repealing Japan’s recently enacted security laws, calling out “Let’s increase the momentum for the elimination of nuclear weapons in this 70th year since the atomic bombings.”
