Nihon Hidankyo issues statement demanding repeal of security laws

On September 19, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) issued a statement demanding the repeal of Japan’s newly enacted security laws. The statement rebukes the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the ruling parties, questioning why the only nation to have experienced nuclear attack must push through legislation which condones war, subverting Article 9 of the Constitution.

Referring to the way the bills were pushed through an Upper House special committee on legislation for peace and security on September 17 and the Upper House plenary session on September 19, the statement says that the government forced the passage of these bills while ignoring protests from the majority of the public, actions that could undermine the basic principles of popular sovereignty and democracy. The statement demands that the laws be immediately repealed.
