Russian researcher of Holocaust visits Holocaust Education Center in Fukuyama

by Kazuho Hosoda, Staff Writer

Ilya Altman, 60, a leading Russian researcher of the Holocaust at the Russian State University for the Humanities, visited the Holocaust Education Center in the city of Fukuyama on November 10 and was guided through the center by Akio Yoshida, the assistant director.

Professor Altman has been researching the genocide of the Jewish people by the former Soviet Union, as well as Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara (1900 - 1986) who saved the lives of Jewish refugees during World War II. In 1992 he established the Russian Research and Educational Holocaust Center in Russia.

Professor Altman studied the replica of a letter written by Otto Frank, the father of Anne Frank (1929 - 1945), which was sent to his wife after he was released from the Auschwitz concentration camp, a list of visas Mr. Sugihara issued to Jewish refugees, and other exhibits. After the tour, the professor said it was notable that the center includes exhibits related to Mr. Otto, since many other museums focus on the hardships and suffering of Anne Frank.

The Russian professor is visiting Japan to give several lectures. Before coming to Fukuyama, he paid a visit to the “Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum” in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, where the Jewish refugees landed. He is scheduled to speak at Hiroshima City University in Asaminami Ward, Hiroshima on November 11.
