Nihon Hidankyo urges government to monitor health of earthquake survivors

On March 11, five years after the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No. 1 (Daiichi) nuclear power plant, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) issued a statement to the Japanese government, asking it to thoroughly monitor the health of all those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Based on the view that it is necessary to have a long-term health management program to minimize the effects of radiation, the statement urges the government to issue personal health certificates and carry out medical check-ups at least once a year.

With regard to the Otsu District Court’s provisional injunction to suspend the operation of the No. 3 and No. 4 nuclear reactors at the Takahama nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture, operated by the Kansai Electric Power Company, the statement says that the court decision warns of the risks involved in resuming the operation of the nuclear power plant, and calls on the government to change its energy policy. The statement was sent to the Cabinet Office; the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; and the Tokyo Electric Power Company.
