by Shinji Morito, Staff Writer

Kövér László, 56, the speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at Hiroshima City Hall on May 16. After learning about the horrific reality of the atomic bombing, Mr. Kövér said that he will convey the message to the Hungarian people that nuclear weapons must never be used again.

Before visiting the mayor, Mr. Kövér toured Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum located in the city’s Peace Memorial Park and listened to the account of an A-bomb survivor. Asked for cooperation in encouraging more cities to join Mayors for Peace, Mr. Kövér promised to lend his support. Currently, five Hungarian cities are members of the organization.

At the invitation of the House of Councilors of Japan, Mr. Kövér arrived in Japan on May 11, his first visit to this country, to promote exchanges between the national assemblies of the two nations. His visit to Hiroshima was realized at his request.
