by Nobushige Sakai, Staff Writer

On September 24, following the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a resolution which urges all nations to refrain from conducting any type of nuclear-weapon test explosion, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui issued a statement saying that the resolution demonstrates the clear determination of the international community to advance the abolition of nuclear arms.

The Hiroshima mayor went on to say that he hopes the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) will be realized and support international efforts to abolish nuclear weapons. Seeking to raise global momentum for a world without nuclear arms, the mayor said that the city will work in concert with member nations of Mayors for Peace and urge all nations to take part in constructive discussions to establish a nuclear weapons convention.
