by Kohei Okata, Staff Writer

On July 29, prior to the final meeting of the U.N. working group on nuclear disarmament, Mayors for Peace (led by Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui) sent an open letter to all 193 member countries of the United Nations, expressing strong support for the working group. The letter seeks to boost the group’s efforts for the goal of establishing a legal ban on nuclear arms.

The letter stresses the importance of discussions about legal measures for creating a world without nuclear weapons. Pointing out that the nuclear weapon states have not fulfilled their obligations to eliminate their nuclear arms, the letter says that Mayors for Peace hopes that the final four-day meeting to be held on August 5, 16, 17, and 19 will bring about a groundbreaking turning point toward a legal ban on nuclear weapons.

The meeting is the third following those held in February and May. Mayors for Peace also sent email on July 29 to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and each U.N. member country’s office in Geneva, Switzerland, where the meeting will be held, and each U.N. member country’s office at U.N. headquarters in New York. Mayors for Peace also requested that the 7095 member cities in 161 member areas convey a similar message to their governments and citizens.
