Mayors for Peace asks member cities to make efforts for nuclear weapons convention

On November 2, Mayors for Peace (for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president) sent out a letter to strengthen efforts for the negotiations to discuss a nuclear ban treaty, which are expected to start at the United Nations in March 2017. The letter was sent via email, in Mr. Matsui’s name, to all 7,164 member cities in 162 nations and regions. The member cities are being asked to fortify their efforts so that all nations will attend the meeting and move the discussions forward.

In this letter, Mayors for Peace welcomes the fact that the First Committee of the U.N. General Assembly, which deals with disarmament issues, adopted a resolution last month to begin negotiations for a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. The letter stresses: “To realize global nuclear disarmament at the earliest possible date, it is crucial for all U.N. Member States to participate in the negotiating conference and to start engaging in constructive deliberations.” It goes on to encourage policymakers of the nuclear-armed states and those under a “nuclear umbrella” that either opposed the resolution or abstained from voting to take part in the meeting and asks them to share their ideas and successful actions among member cities.
