City of Hiroshima announces agreement to collaborate with City of Sarajevo

by Gosuke Nagahisa, Staff Writer

On January 13, the City of Hiroshima announced the Exchange and Collaboration City Declaration, an agreement that the city has concluded with Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is the first such agreement in the international exchange approach that Hiroshima has newly established. The two cities will collaborate in the three areas of peace, culture, and the environment. The City of Hiroshima will invite the mayor of Sarajevo to attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony held on August 6 and consider holding an A-bomb Exhibition in Sarajevo.

The Exchange and Collaboration City Declaration is an approach in which the City of Hiroshima promotes collaboration with cities overseas in designated areas such as peace and culture. When the City of Hiroshima and a city overseas deepen their relationship after concluding the agreement, the two cities will form a sister city and friendship city relationship. The City of Hiroshima established this approach in response to a number of requests from cities overseas.

Discussions with Sarajevo began in January 2016. Sarajevo Mayor Ivo Komsic signed the agreement on December 22 of last year, and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui signed it on January 13. In the 1990s, Sarajevo endured tragedy as a result of the war in Bosnia. It was selected as the first city for Hiroshima’s new approach because it has engaged in proactive efforts since joining Mayors for Peace in 2006 and becoming a leader city in the organization.

An official from Hiroshima’s International Affairs Department said, “We would like to exchange information on various measures, with a focus on peace issues. We will consider collaborating with other cities in the future, too, if they approach us.”
