U.S. city official learning more about Hiroshima internship experience

by Kyosuke Mizukawa, Staff Writer

Pa Vang Goldbeck, 27, an official from the city of Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States, is now undertaking an internship at the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation located in Naka Ward, Hiroshima. The city of Des Moines serves as a leader city in the United States for Mayors for Peace (led by Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui), and the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation is the secretariat of Mayors for Peace. Ms. Goldbeck is learning more about the damaging consequences of the atomic bombing and the peace activities being pursued in Hiroshima and will make use of this knowledge for peace efforts in Des Moines after she returns home.

Ms. Goldbeck is responsible for coordinating the work of the mayor of Des Moines. On January 17, she interacted with about 60 students from Hiroshima Jogakuin High School. While showing photos, she talked about her city’s efforts to help build a peaceful world, including the “Hiroshima-Nagasaki Observance” which saw the mayor of Des Moines make an appeal last August for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Ms. Goldbeck will be in Hiroshima from January 11 to 23. During her stay, she will listen to accounts from A-bomb survivors and learn about peace activities in Hiroshima, such as the campaign to plant seeds and saplings from A-bombed trees in places around the world. She said that she wants to know more about the long-term impact of nuclear weapons and peace efforts being made by other cities. She hopes to help increase the number of Mayors for Peace member cities in the United States.

Mayors for Peace launched the internship program starting from this fiscal year in order to revitalize the activities of member cities. Ms. Goldbeck is the fifth participant in the program.
