Chugoku Shimbun newspaper from August 7, 1945, to be sold at Rest House

by Kyoji Matsumoto, Staff Writer

On August 1, the Chugoku Shimbun will start sales of the “Hiroshima Shimbun” at the Rest House, an A-bombed building located in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, in the city’s Naka Ward. The Hiroshima Shimbun is a newspaper dating back to August 7, 1945, that was not published on that date due to the atomic bombing. The Chugoku Shimbun’s labor union first published that issue of the newspaper on the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing. The special issue’s articles are written from a modern-day perspective, based on the Chugoku Shimbun’s plans for the publication to be read by tourists and utilized in peace-education programs.

“Hiroshima destroyed by new-type of bomb,” and “More than 50,000 people killed” are some of the front-page headlines that ran in the eight-page broadsheet issue that was published in August 1995. Each page includes photographs and maps explaining the circumstances surrounding the disaster and stories behind the development of the atomic bombs by the United States, among other news. The issue carries an “opinion” piece instead of an “editorial.” Each Hiroshima Shimbun issue will be sold in an A4-size clear plastic folder including a separate explanation of the newspaper. A total of 5,000 sets of the newspaper have been printed, with each set to be sold for 550 yen.
