Chugoku Shimbun publishes its series and photos in book form, “Striving to Fill Voids in Hiroshima”

On June 23, the Chugoku Shimbun (located in Naka Ward, Hiroshima) and publisher, The Mediasion (located in Nishi Ward, Hiroshima) published a book titled Hiroshima no Kuhaku Hibaku 75 Nen (Striving to Fill Voids in Hiroshima 75 years after the Atomic Bombing). This book is a compilation of the series of the same title that won the 2020 Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association award for its pursuit of the true scope of damage caused by the atomic bombing, which has yet to be clarified.

The book consists of the original stories in the series as well as “Recreating Cityscapes,” a series of photos taken in Hiroshima before it was annihilated in the atomic bombing. While the number of victims who died in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the end of 1945 is estimated to be 140,000 plus or minus 10,000, the series has reveals there are many victims not listed in official records. Many black-and-white photos taken before the atomic bombing convey lives stolen by the bombing, how daily life was affected, and the life of their communities. The photos mainly appeared in the Chugoku Shimbun from November 2019 to August 2020.

The A4-size book contains 128 pages and is priced at 2,420 yen. It is available now at major bookstores in Hiroshima prefecture, the Museum Shop inside Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and online at Amazon. It will also go on sale beginning July 10 at the Rest House in Peace Memorial Park. For further details, contact The Mediasion at 070-3125-7458 (weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).
