Local leaders in Hiroshima Prefecture expressed their congratulations one after another to Fumio Kishida, former chairperson of the Policy Research Council of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Hiroshima native who won the LDP's presidential election on September 29. They expressed hope Mr. Kishida would exercise his ability in order to restore confidence in politics and resolve national and international issues.

Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki responded to questions from the media at the Hiroshima Prefectural Government and expressed his pleasure, saying he was proud of Mr. Kishida's becoming the LDP president. He cited measures against the coronavirus and correction of centralization of all aspects of Japanese society in Tokyo as challenges, and stressed, "I believe we should refrain from expecting that there will be something good for Hiroshima Prefecture because Mr. Kishida is from Hiroshima. Resolving Japan's problems will lead to resolving Hiroshima's problems." He also expressed his hopes for stable management of the government based on politics with great transparency.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui expressed his heightened expectation of promotion of peace-related efforts and nuclear abolition and said in an interview at Hiroshima City Hall: "I believe Mr. Kishida will address peace and diplomatic issues with the A-bombed city of Hiroshima's wish at the center." In particular, Mr. Matsui referred to the meeting of the State Parties of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) to be held in March 2022, of which the Japanese government has turned its back. He said, "I hope Mr. Kishida will propose Japan's participation in the meeting as an observer if the Japanese government is to serve as a bridge (between nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states)."

Fukuyama Mayor Naoki Edahiro released a comment: "I hope Mr. Kishida will work on measures against the coronavirus, which are the biggest challenge, and play an active part in bringing about a robust economy and turning local areas into vigorous ones.
