General Conference of Mayors for Peace postponed until October for third time to avoid coincidence with NPT

On March 30, Mayors for Peace (for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president) announced its general conference, scheduled to be held in early August in the city of Hiroshima, would be postponed until October. It was decided if the general conference were to be held in August, it would coincide with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference held in New York, which would affect the activities of Mayors for Peace, such as dispatching a delegation.

The postponed dates are October 19 and 20, and the general conference will be held at the International Conference Hall Hiroshima located in the city’s Naka Ward. The general conference was originally scheduled to be held in August 2020 but has already been postponed twice in response to the spread of the coronavirus, and this is the third time the date has been changed.

At the general conference, Mayors for Peace will discuss the efforts of member cities based on the new guidelines and action plans compiled last summer and hold a commemorative event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding. It is assumed that the event will be held in a way that combines local and online participation.

A Mayors for Peace staff member said, “We found it difficult to achieve results at both the NPT Review Conference and general conference. I want to make the general conference a place for discussion, taking into account the results of the NPT Review Conference as well.” The Mayors for Peace organization has a membership of about 8,000 cities from 166 countries and regions. The last general conference was held in the city of Nagasaki in August 2017.
