Hiroshima City begins accepting applications for general public, A-bomb survivors, and victims’ families to attend Peace Memorial Ceremony

by Taiki Yomura, Staff Writer

On June 10, the Hiroshima City government is to begin accepting applications from people hoping to attend the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony held on August 6 at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, located in the city’s Naka Ward. Applications will be accepted for seating for the general public, which was not available the past two years because of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as for A-bomb survivors and victims’ relatives. This year will mark the first time for the city government to invite advance applications to attend the event. Applications will be accepted until June 30.

About 1,000 seats will be set aside for the general public and 250 for A-bomb survivors and victims’ relatives. The seats for the general public will be placed one meter apart, and attendees will be asked to wear masks while seated. As most A-bomb survivors and victims’ relatives are elderly, their seats will be spaced two meters apart. To reduce the potential for heatstroke, the elderly attendees will not be asked to wear masks while seated.

Each applicant for seating at the event can apply for up to two seats. Applicants can send a postcard or fax with such information as their name, address, telephone number, as well as the designation and number of seats. Applications can also be made using a special application form linked on the city government’s website. Applications must be made by 5:00 p.m. on June 30. A-bomb survivors and victims’ relatives can apply for both the general-public seating and the seating designated for such individuals. If there are too many applications, those allowed to attend will be selected by special drawing, after which tickets will be sent out by July 22.

In 2020 and 2021, the numbers of seats were reduced due to coronavirus pandemic. This year, four times more seats will be made available, totaling about 3,550. The city decided to invite advance applications and not prepare unreserved seating to prevent overcrowding at the event venue. A staff member at the Citizens Activities Promotion Division of the Hiroshima City government said, “Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the ceremony cannot be held under normal conditions, but we hope as many people as possible are able to attend.”

Applications should be sent to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony Application Office by ordinary post to the Hiroshima Central Post Office, 730-8799, or by fax at 082-236-8693. For inquiries, please contact a designated call center at 082-236-8691 during the hours 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
