“Peace intern” Clarisse Torregrossa, French graduate student, accompanies reporters on their beats, translates articles at Chugoku Shimbun

Clarisse Torregrossa, 23, a graduate student at Rennes 2 University in France and an exchange student at Hiroshima City University, has been working in the position of “peace intern” once a week at the Chugoku Shimbun’s Hiroshima Peace Media Center since June, earlier this year. She will be engaged in the work of translating the newspaper’s A-bomb related articles into French and accompanying reporters as they work their beats covering the news until mid-August.

Ms. Torregrossa is an international business major who applied to study through an exchange program at Hiroshima City University, which has an overseas academic exchange agreement with the French university, based on her desire to study in the A-bombed city of Hiroshima. This is the first time that Hiroshima City University has hosted an international student whose study program also includes an internship at a private company.

Ms. Torregrossa is a huge fan of Japanese anime. In addition to her native tongue of French, she is fluent in Spanish and English and proficient enough in Japanese to engage in everyday conversation. She is enthusiastic about the position, calling it “an opportunity to learn about Hiroshima and to study the vocabulary associated with peace.”
