Striving to fill voids in Hiroshima—List of A-bomb victims available for public viewing in Hiroshima

by Fumiyasu Miyano, Staff Writer

Starting August 1, a list of names of A-bomb victims offering clues about people whose whereabouts are unknown because of the atomic bombing was put on public display in a training room on the third floor of the International Conference Center Hiroshima, in the city’s Naka Ward. The names of 23,039 people and the circumstances of the end of their lives are included on the list. The public exhibit of the name list will continue through August 6.

The list consists of 83 volumes in total, including such information as autopsy reports discovered at the Hiroshima Higashi (East) Police Station in 1968, as well as death certificates issued at neighboring town and village government offices. A victim’s surviving family is required to fill out a record slip with the name and address of the person in question in order to apply for a search of the name. If that person’s information is included on the list, the family can receive a copy of the information in question and thereby ascertain the name, cause of death, and location and time of death.

The Hiroshima City government has publicly exhibited the list each year at around the same time since 1968. Last year, 27 people applied for a search of the missing, resulting in confirmation of nine people included on the list. The city’s Peace Promotion Division said, “We hope the list will be of some help in filling the voids of A-bombing devastation regarding which the entire picture is still unclear.”

At the same venue, a list of unclaimed remains of A-bomb victims stored in the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound, located within Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the city’s Naka Ward, is also on display. The names of some of the remains have been confirmed but they are as yet unclaimed. Application for registration on the register of names of A-bomb victims and confirmation of information are possible from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For details, please contact the city’s Peace Promotion Division at 082-242-7831.
