Hiroshima Summit 2023: Hiroshima Summit prefectural council solicits photos for mosaic art welcoming leaders of nations

by Minako Okuda, Staff Writer

On November 18, ahead of the summit meeting of the G7 (Group of Seven Industrialized nations), to be held in Hiroshima in May 2023, the Hiroshima Summit prefectural council, a public-private organization in Hiroshima Prefecture, announced a project to create mosaic art welcoming the leaders of the nations. It will solicit photos of citizens with messages and combine them to complete two pictures that convey their wish for peace. On November 19, there will only exist half a year until the opening of the summit, which will be held for the first time in the atomic-bombed city.

This is one of the hospitality projects entitled “Smile for Peace Project.” One picture will be produced by the primary deadline of December 31, and the other by the final deadline of April 2, 2023. The pictures will be displayed at the venues of related events in which the prefectural council is involved and will also be shown in the morning editions of the Chugoku Shimbun.

The council is now soliciting photos from individuals or a group of people displaying a piece of paper or other material with words of welcome to the leaders of the nations. Anyone can apply for the project and write a message without a character limit on a photo that conveys the charm of Hiroshima or an image of peace. A staff member of the council’s management office is calling for cooperation, saying, “We want a wide range of generations to participate in the project and increase the welcome momentum.”

Applicants can apply via the application form on the Chugoku Shimbun’s children website “Bun Touch.” For inquiries, contact Chugoku Shimbun summit photo application section at 082-236-2211 on weekday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
