Hiroshima Summit May 19 through 21: Let’s have a grass-roots debate on “nuclear abolition” or “sustainability” topics—NPOs hold first preparatory meeting to plan Citizens’ Summit in April

Some Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in Hiroshima Prefecture are now launching a plan to hold a “Hiroshima Citizens’ Summit” prior to the summit meeting of G7 (The Group of Seven industrialized nations) to be held in Hiroshima in May. Under the theme of a “Nuclear-free and sustainable society with no one left behind,” citizens are expected to have debates at the meeting. On January 27, the preparatory meeting for the event kicked off in Naka Ward, Hiroshima.

The Hiroshima Citizens’ Summit is to take place at the International Conference Center, Hiroshima in Naka Ward on April 16 and 17. The citizens are engaged in activities in many different fields such as the elimination of nuclear weapons, the environment, and education, and will interact with each other and have discussions. The summit organizers are also attempting to hold a related pre-event on April 15.

For the first preparatory meeting, about 60 people got together, including those attending online, in response to a call from five promotors such as Junpei Hirao, representative director of the NPO “Hiroshima-jin university network” in Nishi Ward. Attendees shared their opinions, saying “We want to bring together our wisdom collectively for solving social challenges,” or “It would be better to compile a declaration at the end, and appeal to the national and local governments.” The meeting in preparation for the citizens’ summit will be continually held on a monthly basis from now on.

The Citizens’ Summit has been held at the venues of the previous summit meetings as well, including the 2016 Ise-Shima summit in Mie Prefecture and the G20 summit held in Osaka in 2019. This time, an executive committee was formed for the event, seeking participation of individuals and groups to be involved in the operation.
