Hiroshima Summit, May 19-21: Hiroshima, Nagasaki mayors make arrangements to meet ambassadors

As the summit meeting of The Seven industrialized nations (G7) will be held in Hiroshima in May, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui and Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue will visit Tokyo to meet ambassadors to Japan of the G7 nations, and request leaders of these nations talk with A-bomb survivors and visit Nagasaki, it was learned on February 10.

According to several sources, the mayors will visit the embassies of the G7 countries in Japan. They are making arrangements to meet with U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel, British Ambassador Julia Longbottom, and French Ambassador Philippe Setton, among others.

The Japanese government has been adjusting the summit schedule to include the leaders’ visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum located in Peace Memorial Park in the city’s Naka Ward. Some in the Japanese and U.S. governments have proposed that U.S. President Joe Biden visit Nagasaki, the first incumbent U.S. president to do so if realized. The leaders of the two A-bombed cities will unite their efforts to materialize these plans.
